Finger Lakes Wine Center We were truly honored to
be the design studio chosen to create the identity for the Finger
Lakes Wine Center (FLWC). The 3,000 square foot center, scheduled
to open in 2010, will provide tourists the opportunity to learn
about the wine industry surrounding Ithaca, New York.
The Finger Lakes region of New York boasts the largest concentration
of wineries outside of California's Napa Valley wine country and
consists of more than 100 wineries along Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga,
and Canandaigua lakes. In 2004, there were 4.14 million wine-related
tourists who visited New York state generating $420 million in sales.
The FLWC was conceived as a New York State wine education center,
museum and gateway to the Finger Lakes regional wine industry. The
FLWC’s vision is to educate people about wine and grapes including
history, agricultural practices, winemaking, varieties, the relationship
between wine and food. The FLWC will offer tourist information and
advice, maps, guides to specific wines and wineries along with other
relevant literature.
This two-color logo design avoids the traditional rustic imagery
usually associated with wine making such as old barrels and wooden
signage. Instead we created a looped vine and a stylized grape cluster
that breaks the surrounding outline providing subtle depth. This
depth is emphasized by filling the grapes with shades of the same
green which also stays within the two-color restriction.
The grape cluster leads the eyes down to a sleek sans serif typeface.
The result is a clean, sophisticated, upscale feeling that pleased
our client.
